Ever tackled a new task or new challenge then hit a wall and bailed!
I was doing really well on this new journey. I was managing to navigate the purchase process with ease. Sussing out it was probably a good idea to have a full pre-purchase inspection ! So I found myself a Marine Surveyor and booked a "lift" at the marina. I had seen this blue contraption at the marina and assumed this is was what would be doing the lifting. I was so excited about seeing this baby out of the water and taking a proper look at her.
I arrived at the marina to see her already hanging. Seeing her in her entirety was exciting. However I felt the familiar waves of terror rising up. What the hell, this thing is a boat, it can sink, It could be a money trap. The itty shitty bitty committee joined me on board and rubbished all my joyful enthusiasm. Then the surveyor started talking a new language. My bow thruster wasn't working. What the f*ck is one of those. I want a boat not the Star Ship bloody Enterprise. Tim turned up to drive or is it navigate her back to its berth and I joined him at the bow or is starboard!!!! I stood on deck in a bit of a glazed stupor. Do I deserve this, can I learn a new skill?
I took a walk and chatted with Charlotte who was handling the sale. It helped to talk about all the great things I imagined doing and why we had thought this a great idea in the first place. How much we looked forward to the enjoyment it will give our kids, my grand kids, my nephew and nieces & friends. Getting bikes and doing the cycle routes around Bristol. Sitting by the waterside sipping a coffee or something stronger!
Calm again, I can do this. Tim is an excellent sailor he will teach me what I need to know. I can find someone in the marina who was a novice and find out how they learned. It will be like driving, the first lessons will be hard but the more I practice I will be fine. Arthur Bandura came up with the concept of the Bandura Curve. Sometimes when we reach the threshold of competence, when we reach a learning point that enduces fear and not excitement we often bail. But I think I made it, I got over the fear hurdle. Its now full steam ahead to sale completion. Bring it on!
